Good but not great

I have to disagree with the two preveous reviewers. Having seen both Met and Bayreuth productions, I must say I was disappointed at both. Peter Hoffman was good in both performance. Problem lies on Elsa for both. Karin Armstrong for Bayreuth edition was overmatched by Peter. She was too light, in my oppinion, inspite of her beautiful voice. Eva Marton for met, despite her loud voice, was even worse. It was very unprofessional of her to show her displeasure so openly when crowd cheered for Tatiana Troyanos, who sang Ortrud, instead of her. She even refused to take flowers from one of her fan. Mr. Hofmann had to step up and get the the bouquet from the fan and hand it over to her. There is better video available: Wiener Staadstsoper edition starring Placido Domingo and Cheryl Studer, conducted by Claudio Abbado. I'll give 5 stars for that, 4 stars for Bayreuth, 3 for Met.

The viewer above from Lexington, MA assumed that the vidio was the MAt version because he thought it was the only version with Hoffman; he is incorrect. The Bayreuth version as part of the Philips Richard Wagner Edition also stared Hoffman, which would make more sence. I beleive this version is that of the Bayreuth Festival which is a wonderful provacative recording, which is far superior to any Met recording.

Best video recording of Lohengrin currently available
Rating (5)
Date: 1999-03-20
This review assumes the recording is that by the Metropolitan Opera; I'm not aware of any other Lohengrin recording featuring Peter Hoffman. (I wish AMAZON.COM would identify orchestras or opera companies and conductors in its listings.) I regard the MET's recording of this opera with Peter Hofmann, available on VHS and Laserdisc, as the best currently available. Staging is realistic, conforming to the description in the libretto. For the most part, all performers look and act their roles as well as could be hoped for. I'm somewhat uncomfortable with Ortrud's facial expression during the first scene of the second act when she sings a long, drawn out "Gott?" and I wish the audience didn't burst into applause after her long aria during that scene, a behavior seldom encountered at Wagner operas.
