This was the first album, tape of any kind, that I called my own. Branigan 2 holds alot of memories and emotions for me, because, my girl friend at the time, bought this album for me, I bought her a little ring of some sort, but back to Branigan 2, I wore this tape, yes tape out listening to it, and loved every song on it, of course there is "Solitaire" and "How Am I Supposed To Live Without You", but there was also "Squeeze Box" probably one of my favorites of hers never released. This is one album now that Laura is no longer here, I must get reacquianted with, beacuse I did and always will love this album. This album was part of my childhood, and I know that sounds weird but it is true. Every song I hear now from Laura is going to be a painful listen, but hopefully I will be able to say at one point down the road, that listening to her music will make me smile again, but not right now. Laura you were and are an angel.

Branigan 2--The Return of Gloria...I mean Laura

Laura Branigan really honed her style in her sophomore effort, which firmly established her in the ranks of 80's pop/rock women like Pat Benatar and Sheena Easton. Chalk up another winner for one of the 1980's best pop/rock goddesses.Branigan 2-the Sequel, begins with the single "Solitaire" on a woman who's alone now after a bad relationship and it falls under reflective/breakup song. "Solitaire, it got so lonely/Solitaire, no one to hold me/Where were you when I played solitaire?" The melody reminds me of Sheena Easton's "Long Distance Love Affair" and has the same pace, although it rocks as hard as any of Benatar's material. A big highlight here! Getting this is not akin to playing poker--you'll hit the jackpot anytime. "Deep In The Dark" features a monologue and is a forerunner to "Self Control" is rhythm and the chorus. "Close Enough" is actually a positive love song that Journey could have tried to do, given the searing keyboard synthesizers. However, it's Laura's song hands down. She sings "Close enough to make it last/Now there's no turning back/We'll do it together." And to finalize the moment, she says, "And now, now the time has come/To keep the love we found just close enough." "Lucky" tells of the woman's necessity to leave someone unfulfilling who was oblivious to her pain. The chorus and keyboards are akin to a muted version of "Gloria." It goes "Lucky, I said I hope you try and understand/Lucky, guess it's not like we planned/Lucky, you know I really really love you so/But Lucky, I still have to go." This could easily become a country song, given the right singer. Then comes her cover of the Who's "Squeeze Box," tastefully done in the mid-paced Branigan style pop. And now, to set the record straight, comes a lovely song that may have been a hit for Michael Bolton but was covered beforehand by Laura-"How Am I Supposed To Live Without You." She's got the better voice too. The ultimate Branigan heartbreak song is right here-"Tell me how am I supposed to live without you/Now that I've been lovin' you so long/How am I supposed to live without you/And how am I supposed to carry on/When all that I've been livin' for is gone." Good going, Laura! "I'm Not The Only One" is a dance number akin to Self Control's "Satisfaction." "Mama" is a daughter-to-mother letter proving the daughter right, that yes, she did become a bad girl, but the guy she fell for made it worth it and they're still together. The narrator in the soaring pop ballad "Find Me" displays a great vulnerability and emotion, wanting the shelter of someone's arms. That's the opposite case in the fierce, bitter rocker "Don't Show Your Love," extolling loneliness and freedom. A key lyric spells it out: "Loneliness lives out in the world/People afraid to give/Better off free, out on your own/Living your life alone." She's definitely talking about the capitalist 80's, where people loved money." No, she did not call her next album Branigan 3, because she had Self Control-sorry, I couldn't resist.

I always thought (and still do) ,that Laura Branigan has one of the most powerful female voices of the last 20 years. She can sing rings around Celine Dion ANY day!!!!! Why Laura wasn't asked to sing that theme from the movie Titanic instead of Celine is a mystery. Guess what, Celine? Laura has a NEW cd of new material due out in 2003 and your days as best female voice are numbered. Once the new young generation hears Laura Branigan they'll stand up and take notice! This sophomore cd from Laura is pretty good. The sound quality is a vast improvement, for one thing. The cd suffers from choice of material and a few lame cuts. I see that Laura likes to do a remake on just about every cd she puts out. Many times they are an improvement on the original, but her version of "Squeezebox" isn't one of them. And why even bother redoing that song anyway, as it's not a great song in the first place. I thought "Momma" was a stupid song about a girl who wants to be bad and sneak out her window to go have some late night sex with her boyfriend. Who writes this cheesy stuff?? Anyway, if you're a fan of Laura then get this cd.

The Emotional Side of Laura Branigan

After purchasing The Best of Branigan and Self Control, I definitely wanted more. I found this album and I was not disappointed. The songs are excellent and very emotional. Laura outdoes herself on all of her albums. My favorite songs are: Solitaire, Deep in the Dark, Close Enough, How Am I Supposed to Live Without You, I'm Not the Only One, Find Me and Don't Show Your Love. I would highly recommend this to anyone.

Another great Pete Droge offering
Rating (4)
Date: 2008-12-07
I became a Pete fan recently, when I heard a couple of his songs on the Neil Young Bridge School collection CD. Picked up Necktie Second and Find a Door and loved them both.
This CD is just as solid. Great songwriting, nice rhythms. I'm really surprised Pete has gotten so little radio airplay. Give him a listen.
Do Be True and Train Love to Stay, particularly stand out.

I've always wanted to get into Pete Droge's music. I think his song "Beautiful Girl" is a great song. I also enjoy The Thorns cd. I also like his song "If You Don't Love Me I'll Kill Myself" from Dumb and Dumber. Also, he has a quick cameo in Almost Famous as Gram Parsons while singing the chorus to "Small Time Blues" that I enjoyed. "Small Time Blues" was enough to make me want to check this cd out and when I read the good fan reviews on Amazon, I went for it.... Wish I hadn't. In my opinion, the music was generic and the lyrics were uninspired. Fans of Pete Droge may really enjoy this disc, but it is not for the casual listener.

Pete Droge has finally produced a great album with "Skywatching". While I like his previous albums (though I still don't have "Spacey & Shakin"), none of them are great the whole way through. Droge seems to have learned a bit from working with Stone Gossard on "Bayleaf," as there are definite similarities in some of the vocal lines and delivery here to Stone's solo work ("Hard to Tell You," & "Bring Up the Failure" especially). Overall, the album still isn't a rocker like his album with the Sinners nor "Beautiful Girl," but is a really nice, mellow disc that's not your straight-forward singer/songwriter material. By the way, "Small Time Blues" is just a tremendous song. Anyway, highly recommended to fans of his previous work, Stone Gossard's solo work, or anyone looking for a cool, mellow album. Definitely more staying power and more unique than his album with the Thorns.

This is the fourth Pete Droge release, and it is a good one. Well worth the five year wait. Buy the Thorns cd too.
