One Song Makes it Worth Every Penny

You can get much better compilations of George Jones' Musicor library, however it's almost impossible to find "When My Heart Hurts No More" anywhere but on this CD. It's an amazing performance!! There are a handful of songs among the thousands he cut over the past 50 years which he sings with a quiet, understated intensity that is so powerful it's almost too painful to bear. This is one of those. We all love it when he unleashes his full vocal arsenal, but "When My Heart Hurts No More" proves he can be just as intense and powerful by using his more subtle talents. I've heard them all, and this is one of his greatest studio performances. I'd give anything to hear him sing it today. If you love George Jones, you need to own this one song.

I never get tired of listening to George,s wonderful voice and these songs are no exception.
When he sings about favorite lies, there is so much feeling there that it sounds like a confession.
I really enjoy this CD.

Two Jones Boys instrumentals pad out this paltry CD of Musicor songs. Not recommended.

Country Sounds of the Past
Rating (5)
Date: 2003-06-22

In our fast living times names like Pee Wee King & Redd Stewart might not sound too familiar to younger folks, but they were real big in the 1940's and 1950's. It is always good to hear the old material again, songs like "Slowpoke", "Oh Monah" and "Silver and Gold". Pee Wee King's music was always a blend of Western Swing, Hillbilly, Polka with a little touch of Jazz and upcoming Rockabilly, the band's players were top notch. Sound quality of these transcriptions is very good, interesting liner notes are included. Another chance to listen to the early sounds of Country Music that influenced the modern day music. The transcriptions were recorded around 1952, the heighdays of Hillbilly Music.

WHOLE FAMILY FAVORITE!
Rating (5)

My two sons love Davy Crockett, so when we saw the Riders in the Sky in concert and heard this CD would be coming out we could hardly wait. The CD didn't disappoint us a bit, except maybe that it left us wanting more. Includes wonderful versions of the Crockett songs you've heard before such as the all famous "Ballad," "King of the River," and "Farewell," and new songs written by the Riders like "Headin' for Texas" (beautiful!). I highly recommend this! Brings back fond memories of the days when Davy was huge, and introduces a great hero to our children today, someone willing to fight for what's right ("Be Sure You're Right, And Then Go Ahead").

We take the Riders with us on vacation everywhere we go. They are fun for the whole family to sing along, and if nothing else, our attempts at their yodel techniques are quite entertaining.

This is a fun nostalgia trip for boomers who grew up playing cowboys and indians and those of us who are younger who grew up with Disney LPs and song records- truly great fun. A note here- the Ballad of Davy Crockett was a top selling number one hit in the 50s for its singer- BIll Hayes known today for his role as Doug WIlliams on the soap Days of Our Lives. Bill has an accomplished career in music, stage and song as well as soaps.

Like a "lamp under a bushel"...

Without question, the quality of Anita Carter's voice is as good as it gets. There is no superlative that can adequately describe the tone and range of this marvelous singer. Until I heard this CD, and specifically her version of "As the Sparrow Goes", I had been more or less convinced that no other female voices could rival those of Patsy Cline, Emmylou Harris and Judy Collins. I believe now that Anita Carter belongs in that exclusive club of female vocalists whose voices are not only magnificent but utterly memorable as well. How or why she never received the recognition she deserves I will leave for others to figure out. It is enough to say that hopefully as time goes on, this lady will be appreciated not only for being a member of country music's first family, but for being one of the most gifted and versatile female voalists of all time.

I bought this as a gift for my husband, he was always talking about
Anita Carter. But he didn't have any of her records. So I got this for him, You see he is a whole lot country, and I'm not. He played this CD for me, her voice gave me goosebumps, absolutely beautiful. I would recommend this CD to everybody. You won't be sorry.

First time I heard Anita Carter sing was with Johnny Cash, Were You There When They Crucified My Lord, haunting and beautiful sound. I play this CD alot and enjoy each and every song, there is wide variety in what she sings and each song is beautifully done, mood-lifting and inspiring. I think my favorite is A Few Short Years Ago.

It's been well documented that June Carter Cash and Merle Kilgore wrote the song "Ring of Fire," which is about her early relationship with Johnny Cash. What's less well known is that it was her youngest sister, Anita, not Johnny Cash, who cut it first, accompanied only by a pair of acoustic guitars. Ring of Fire is the German Bear Family label's presentation of Anita Carter's 1962-1964 Mercury recordings. While Carter is also a daughter of Mother Maybelle, country music, at least in the early '60s, was not her forte -- folk music was. There are 25 tracks here, all of them stunning, some of them unknown, but all of them fine. Some of the cuts here are historic debuts of songs performed by folk and country artist later on. The initial recording of "Satan's Child," written by sister Helen and Danny Dill, Kilgore's "Sour Grapes," her own "All My Trials," and the cut she wrote with June and Kilgore, "As the Sparrow Goes," are all here, as well as readings of A.P. and Maybelle tunes such as her mother's "Fair and Tender Ladies" and "In the Highways," A.P.'s "John Hardy, Bury Me Beneath the Willow," and more. There are unreleased gems here too: a recording of Harlan Howard's "A Few Short Years Ago" and Irving Gordon's "The Kentuckian Song." But more than the cuts -- produced in Nashville and New York by Jerry Kennedy, Shelby Singelton, and Milt Okun -- this recording reveals that Carter's voice is one of the purest and most expressive vehicles either country or folk ever produced. Carter's own reticence is what held her back from superstardom. The music here, most of it with two acoustic guitars, some with a double bass, is simple, even ghostly in the way it frames a voice so seemingly plaintive, yet with a range that is awe-inspiring, given how pristine her singing was, and how she could take even the corniest song ("Voice of the Bayou") and make it a believable and true statement of passion, purpose, or poisonous emotion. By the time the record ends with "Wildwood Flower," the listener has been transported out of time and space and into the heart of Carter's mysterious, darkly inviting, and spiritually resilient vocal. This is one of the best single-volume compilations Bear Family has ever done. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide

Country music's hidden angel

I just received this CD in the mail today, and I absolutely love it. Anita's clear soprano vocals seem to pierce through the emotions of the listener. I would seriously reccomend this to anyone, and I believe that Anita does not get the recognition she deserves as the amazing vocalist that she was. This album is just Anita, in all her glory. Also, if you're a Helen Carter fan like me, she's on here too helping Anita out on some of the songs. Buy it, it's great!

This may not be essential, but if you have a huge collection, you should have this. This has all their well known songs. No notes except an almost xerox looking copy of the original back of the album. The sound is fantastic. One day they should think about a serious reissue of these seminal artists.
