Informative, but poor at identifying key sights, unhelpful for choosing among locales

A disappointing guide. Since it combines detailed, and thorough, information about all places of interest in Ireland with tons of photos, I thought it would be very helpful for narrowing down my possible choices for where to go. But it's very hard to tell from the somewhat bland and often dispassionate, though informative, descriptions what's worth seeing, much less what can't be missed.

Added to this, although it's packed with photos, it often doesn't include photos of the major places of interest, so you can very easily miss out on the most interesting places following this guide. After 10 minutes of internet research, I had a much better idea of where I wanted to go than after reading this book--and many of the places I hadn't really noticed in the book.

(For the record, the blarney stone is, of course, in this book, contrary to the other review.)

It's informative, but I'd recommend it to those who've already decided their destinations, and want more information about other places of interest in the same regions. Otherwise, skip it.

Not very helpful

This book did a good job of stating facts, but did not help guide me at all. The guide did no justice as to what are the major attractions or places to see. Additionally, some of my favorite memories from my trip were not recommended by the book, such as kissing the Blarney Stone. After two days in Ireland, I deemed the book worthless and packed it away. The locals did a better job of pointing out things to do and see.

A good book but very out dated.

I am sure this book was awesome, about 5 years ago. But when I received this book in the mail I was very dissappointed to find that it was published in 2000 and doesn't seem to have been updated since despite being listed as March 2005 on this site. The currency isn't even in euros, it's in the old Greek currency. And with all of the changes to Greece since the olympics this book is absolete.

Essential guide

I used this guide for my recent vacation in Greece. It's wonderful. We spent nearly all of our time in the Peloponnese and enjoyed it very much. The book gives the mythology of each area in a lively style, which added to my pleasure in what I was seeing. We would know what to watch out for before we boarded the bus, train, or taxi. For example, between Nafplio and Epidaurus we saw the bridge from Mycenaean times, after being in Mycenae two days earlier. The Peloponnese is the setting for a great many of the Greek myths, and this guide made it easy to match the story to the place. Also the maps by area - sort of like our county - were excellent.
I would not use this for practicalities of travel, but instead to get you excited about going and about being there. If you pair it with a guide to hotels, restaurants, and transportation, you can have a fabulous vacation. I'm hoping to go again, since there is much that we didn't have time for in 13 days.

An absolute must

An absolute absolute must for anyone going to the Peloponnese, 'the garden of Greece.' Facaros and Theodorou have obviously been up every little by way and thanks to their guidance we found at least a dozen stunning little villages and ancient sites and quirky old churches that no other guides even mention (and we had the Rough Guide and Blue Guide in the car as well). Their in depth knowledge and humour helped us get so much more out of our holiday, and even we who have lived just outside Athens for the past eight years were surprised at all the stuff we didn't know. The restaurant and hotel recommendations were spot on, too, and led us to some places (especially in the mountains) that we never would have found on our own, where nightingales serenaded us to sleep. The only complaint is that there were n't enough site plans, but it's a minor gripe. An excellent guide, and a great read.

Although Greece is thronged with tourists, most of them spend a few days in Athens and then head for the islands. Only a few cross the Corinth Canal into the wild and fascinating island of the Peloponnese, and then only to visit the ruins of Olympia or Sparta. Yet beyond these is a barren, beautiful, and friendly land, heretore neglected by guidebooks. Facaros' "Greece: The Peloponnese" fills this gap, constituting a complete guide to the attractions, accommodations, and geography of this area. It is complete, covering virtually every village, full of historical tidbits, and packed with useful information about hotels, restaurants, good beaches, and, of course, the many ruins dotting this home of ancient Greece. Geared to the independent tourist, its recommendations for food and lodging are tailored to all budgets. This book is the one to read before you go, and take with you; it was invaluable on a recent trip to the region. Go to the Peloponnese before it's discovered (a recent New York Times blurb will hasten that) and take Facaros' book with you. (Note: ancient-history mavens will also want to take "The Blue Guide to Greece", as "Greece: the Peloponnese" does not go into excruciating detail about the many ruins of the island.)

"Travel Detective Bible" is an excellent source for information on travel "do's and dont's. Information for all travelers... from jet setters to those taking their very first trip. Peter Greenberg puts it all in an informative, easy and fun read!

This very well-written and informative book has real useful information by a travel tramp who knows the real ins and outs of travel with very informative and helpful ideas you would never think of to save your trip, your health and your wallet. East to read and in chapters, so you can read areas that interest you most first. The whole book is a great read and I learned many things I would have never known even though I do travel on a regular basis internationally. No details have been left out and travelers can plan their trips much better after reading this book. I looked at other books in the bookstore and this one stands out. Real helpful information explicitly told and you won't want to put this book down. A+

After I saw Peter on Good Morning America, I promptly ordered the book from Amazon. When it arrived, I breezed through the table of contents and decided that it appeared that my best approach would be to start with the first chapter. Spent many evenings fascinated.

I travel a great deal. In January I planned to spend time in Belgium where my grandchild will be born. I need to keep my Executive Coaching business flowing so I was wondering what to do about my cell phone to keep connected to the United States. I went to his book and there were all kinds of tips. Makes my research and decision making very easy.

I've been traveling for business and pleasure for 37 years, up to two weeks and half a dozen different cities per month. Most importantly, my travels have been on my dime, because I'm self-employed, and I've sought every time- and money-saving ploy I could come up with. But I learned a frightening amount of new information from this book.

There is a good mixture of tips for buying tickets, getting the most from your hotel stays, and other procedural topics, as well as good information oriented towards specific destinations. This book is excellent for browsing, or for reading from cover-to-cover.

If you think you know everything there is to know about travel: you don't. Peter Greenberg does, however, and you should take advantage of his expertise.
